Weekly Ritual for Apollon (by Jim Kollens)
AHEAD OF TIME: Have at hand a vessel for libation and purificatory water (khernips). Gather two portions of appropriate incense, one for Apollon and one for Hestia, in a more generous amount than one's daily rituals, and charcoal if using resin. Choose a hymn to Apollon such as one of the two Homeric Hymns, i.e. number III the long hymn, or XXI the short one. Also have at hand the Delphic Maxims. PREPARATION FOR RITUAL: If using charcoal, light it and place on the shrine. Use the khernips and wash yourself. Pour out a libation of something fine and have it ready. Light candles if used. Hold the incense offering and stand in front of the shrine, relaxed. Before beginning anything, just BE in the room, simply feeling yourself and the air. Follow your breath. Just a minute or so should suffice. THE BODY OF THE RITUAL: Hold up the offering and say "Come Lord Apollon, dearest to my heart, you who are first to me! Come and accept my offerings!" Recite the hymn. Spontaneously sing to Apollon, simply offering whatever melody you are capable of, whatever words you wish, or simply his name. Do this while offering the incense on the shrine. Having sung briefly, now recite the Delphic Maxims with the intention of incorporating them into your life as an offering to Apollon. Relax for whatever time you wish, knowing you are in Apollon's presence. Take the incense offering for Hestia and say "Come sweet Hestia, goddess of the hearth, accept my offering!" And light the incense. Now take the vessel with the libation and go out of doors, if possible, to a chosen spot. Extend your arm with the cup and say "To Lord Apollon and sweet Hestia!" Deliberately pour the libation, saving some for yourself. Drink. |
